Arend Küster announced as new Director of CSIRO Publishing

Earlier this year, CSIRO Publishing Director Andrew Stammer announced he would be retiring at the end of 2023, after over 26 years with the business. Andrew’s contribution has been fundamental to our ongoing success, championing our purpose and guiding our strategic direction.

Following an extensive international recruitment process for Andrew’s successor, we are excited to announce that Arend Küster has been appointed Director of CSIRO Publishing, commencing in January 2024.

“It is with great excitement and anticipation that I join CSIRO to lead CSIRO Publishing”, said Arend. “I look forward to working with the team to develop CSIRO Publishing’s impact further, whether it is advancing the journals towards the challenge of sustainable Open Access, harnessing the digital benefits of Open Research, or to build on the reputation of the books and resources.”

Arend joins us from Springer Nature where he has most recently held the position of Director, Academic Affairs, a role which focussed on building strategic relationships with government research organisations across Europe and the Middle East.

Arend has often been at the forefront of the transition to Open Access and has a successful track record in developing and implementing new businesses, delivering growth strategies, and developing and maintaining global relationships.

Given his love of nature, science, and the arts, we are sure Arend will be a fantastic champion for our products and values, too.
