CBCA 2020 Book of the Year: Shortlist announced
Each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) celebrate the best in Australian children’s literature by announcing the CBCA Book of the Year Awards (external link). The awards aim to promote children’s books of high literary and artistic quality, and the annual awards are now one of the most influential and highly respected in Australia.
We are excited to announce that A Hollow Is a Home, written by Abbie Mitchell and illustrated by Astred Hicks, has been shortlisted for the 2020 CBCA Awards in the Eve Pownall Award category (external link) for information books!
Author Abbie Mitchell is an environmental educator who specialises in providing workshops and resources to empower kids to be proactive in nurturing Australian biodiversity – this is her first children’s book.
So why a book about hollows?
Well, did you know that more than 340 Australian animal species need tree hollows? Mammals such as gliders, possums, bats and quolls. And bird species like parrots, owls and falcons. Not to mention a plethora of reptiles, frogs, and invertebrates – and fish, yes fish!
For these animals a hollow may be a bedroom, a hiding place, or even a nursery. A hollow truly is the ultimate tree house.
A Hollow Is a Home will inspire you to look up, down and all around, to discover and appreciate the amazing world of hollows.
The book is also filled with some amazing illustrations depicting hollow habitats and the creatures you find in them.
Illustrator Astred Hicks has been designing award-winning books for more than ten years. A Hollow Is a Home has also been longlisted in the 2020 Australian Book Design Awards (external link) in the Best Designed Children’s Non-Fiction Illustrated Book category.
We’d like to congratulate Abbie and Astred, as well as all the authors, illustrators and publishers of the shortlisted titles.
We are also very proud that Windcatcher: Migration of the Short-tailed Shearwater, was selected as a 2020 CBCA Notable Book (external link) in the Picture Book of the Year category.
Finally we want to offer our thanks and appreciation for the Children’s Book Council of Australia, and all the work they do in promoting the importance of children’s literature.
